Alanya Alaaddin Keykubat University (ALKU) was established in the Alanya district of Antalya, Türkiye, in accordance with the Law No. 6640 on Amendments to the Higher Education Institutions Organization Law and Certain Laws and Decree Laws, adopted by the Grand National Assembly of Türkiye on 31 March 2015 and published in the Official Gazette on 23 April 2015. The University was founded pursuant to Additional Article 161, added to Law No. 2809. Following its establishment, the Department of Genetics and Bioengineering was founded within the Rafet Kayış Faculty of Engineering.
As part of its strategic higher education planning, the Council of Higher Education (CoHE) designates priority areas of specialization for newly established universities. In March 2016, following a meeting attended by the President of the Council of Higher Education, Prof. Dr. M. Yekta Saraç, the Rector of ALKU, Prof. Dr. Ahmet Pınarbaşı, and the rectors of eight other universities, Health, Molecular and Cellular Engineering was designated as ALKU’s strategic area of specialization. In line with this designation, the Department of Genetics and Bioengineering was established.
The Department currently comprises 15 faculty members and 6 research assistants and continues to expand its academic and research capacity. Since admitting its first cohort of students in 2018, the Department has offered a 100% English-medium undergraduate education, preparing graduates with strong foundations in genetics, bioengineering, and interdisciplinary research.
